Daily versus seasonal

A daily badge runs about $13 on weekdays and $15 on weekends and holidays — worth it for a single afternoon, painful for a week. Seasonal badges pay for themselves fast: roughly $120 before the season starts and more once summer is underway. Kids under twelve are free, and there are discounted badges for seniors and free ones for active military. If you're doing the math for a family of four over five days, seasonal wins by Tuesday.

Where to buy

The borough sells badges at the Community House on Madison Avenue and at the boardwalk booth near the North End pavilion. You can also order seasonal badges online through the borough's recreation page in the spring, which is the move if you want the early pricing. Bring cash or a card to the booth; lines are longest on Saturday mornings, so go mid-afternoon or on a weekday.

Getting there

From the cottage it's a straight walk — about six blocks — to the nearest boardwalk entrance. Leave the house at 9:45 and you're on the sand before the crowds claim the good spots by the jetty.

Once you are on the sand

Flash the badge, pick your spot, and you're set for the day. Spring Lake's beach is wide, clean, and non-commercial — no boardwalk vendors, no amusements, just two miles of sand and the ocean. Lifeguards are on duty at the main beaches through the season, and the water stays swimmable well into September. Rinse off at the outdoor showers on your way back, drop the badges on the counter, and they're waiting for tomorrow.
