How to Get to Spring Lake from NYC Without a Car

Most people assume a week at the Jersey Shore requires a car. For Spring Lake, it doesn't. There's a train station in the middle of town, and if you're coming from Manhattan or Brooklyn, the trip is genuinely easy.

Here's how it actually works, including the part nobody mentions.

The train

NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line runs from New York Penn Station down the coast, and Spring Lake has its own stop on Warren Avenue. Total trip is roughly two hours.

The part nobody mentions: most trains require a transfer at Long Branch. Direct service to Spring Lake generally runs during weekday peak hours only. Off-peak and on weekends, you ride to Long Branch, get off, and get on a different train.

It's a cross-platform transfer, so you're walking a few feet, not hauling bags through a station. But if you don't know it's coming, it's a surprise on a Saturday morning with kids and a cooler.

Check the schedule at njtransit.com before you go and look for whether your train is direct or requires the change.

From Brooklyn

Same trip, you just start with a subway to Penn Station. Add 30 to 40 minutes depending where you're coming from.

Timing

Trains run less frequently on weekends, which is exactly when most people travel. Look at the actual schedule rather than assuming there's one every hour. A missed connection at Long Branch can cost you 45 minutes.

Coming down Friday evening in July, expect company. The train fills with people doing the same thing.

What happens when you get off

This is the part that decides whether the no-car plan works.

Spring Lake is small and walkable. The station sits near the middle of town, downtown is right there, and the beach is a walk from most of it. You are not stranded.

But you're arriving with luggage, groceries for the week, and possibly children. Walking is fine on day three. It is less fine at the moment you step off the train.

The cottage is about a mile from the station. That's a four minute drive or a twenty minute walk. We don't run station pickups, so plan on a short cab or rideshare with the bags on arrival day and walk it the rest of the week.

The week without a car

Once you're here, the golf cart handles everything. Beach in the morning, bakery, dinner in town, back home at night. Spring Lake is compact enough that a cart isn't a novelty, it's genuinely the right vehicle for the town.

The things you'd want a car for are the trips out of town. Rod's in Sea Girt, the Parker House, Asbury Park on a rainy afternoon. Those are short rideshares, and if you're doing two or three of them across a week it still costs less than a rental car plus parking.

The honest version

If you want to spend every day somewhere different up and down the coast, bring a car.

If you want to be at the beach, eat in town, and not think about parking in July, the train works and the week is better for it. Spring Lake in August is not a place where having a car is an advantage.
