Spring Lake or Belmar? An Honest Comparison

These towns are neighbors. You can drive between them in a few minutes. And they offer completely different weeks.

I have a stake here, since I rent a house in Spring Lake. So I'm going to be straight about which one is better for which person, including the cases where Belmar is the right answer.

The boardwalks tell you everything

Spring Lake has roughly two miles of boardwalk with nothing on it. No arcades, no food stands, no businesses at all. It's the longest non-commercial boardwalk in New Jersey and that's the entire personality of the town.

Belmar's boardwalk is about 1.25 miles and it's the opposite. Events all summer, movies on the beach, fireworks, sandcastle contests, the New Jersey Seafood Festival in May. There is always something happening.

Neither one is better. They're answers to different questions.

The beach rules

Spring Lake bans food and alcohol on the sand and there are no trash cans on the beach. That sounds strict until you see the beach, which is spotless for exactly that reason.

If your idea of a beach day is a cooler, a spread, and a long afternoon of grazing, that's a real friction point. It's the single most common thing that surprises first-timers.

Badges

Belmar runs about $12 daily and $80 seasonal. Spring Lake is $110 seasonal, with pool and locker options on top.

Belmar is cheaper. Worth knowing if you're a family of five buying badges for a week.

Nightlife

This is the clearest split.

Belmar's F Street fills up by early evening on summer weekends. Bars, a younger crowd, real energy. If you want to walk to a bar after dinner and have that be the night, Belmar is built for it and Spring Lake is not.

Spring Lake is quiet after dinner. That's the product, not a shortcoming.

Crowds and parking

Belmar draws more people, which is what happens when a town programs events all summer. July and August weekends mean tight parking and longer waits.

Spring Lake stays calmer. The beach doesn't pack the way Belmar's does, partly because there's nothing to buy there.

Who each town is for

Choose Belmar if: you want walkable nightlife, you're traveling with a group in their twenties or thirties, you want a beach day with a cooler, you want something programmed happening every day, or you're watching the budget.

Choose Spring Lake if: you have young kids, you want the calmest possible beach, you're going to cook and eat in more than you eat out, you're coming to read and swim and not much else, or you've done the loud shore town and are over it.

The thing most people miss

They're neighbors. Staying in Spring Lake does not mean giving up Belmar, it means Belmar is a short ride when you want it. Go up for a night on F Street, go for the Seafood Festival, come home to a quiet street.

The reverse is harder. If you're staying in Belmar in August, you can visit Spring Lake's beach, but you're going home to the noisy version at the end of the night.

That asymmetry is the whole argument. Quiet home base, loud town nearby, rather than the other way around.
